Thermal conductivity testers measure a material’s thermal conductivity. Common methods include steady-state testing, which establishes a stable temperature gradient and uses heat flow and temperature difference to calculate conductivity, and transient testing during temperature change. In the laser flash method, a laser heats one surface and the rear-face temperature response is measured; the method is used particularly for higher-conductivity materials.
With suitable fixtures and methods, the instruments can test solids, liquids, and powders. Applications described include insulation testing for building materials, material selection for automotive engine heat dissipation, and evaluation of heat-spreading materials in electronics.
